Organizations often use independent contractors and temporary employees to reduce costs. Unfortunately, they are not typically obligated under U.S. federal law to provide core employee benefits such as medical insurance, paid leave, and retirement plans. However, employers should extend their commitment to gender equality in their use of independent contractors and temporary staffing agencies.
